VEIKO VALENCIA

Veiko Valencia is a painter, sculptor, storyteller, and illustrator whose multidisciplinary practice uses images found in biology and Catholicism to explore the concept of Balance. His work considers the tensions and relationships between painting and sculpture, object and artwork, function and nonfunction, and seriousness and absurdity. Working from a studio he describes as both laboratory and church, Valencia creates drawings, paintings, and assemblages that bring together found objects and fragments of earlier works.

Valencia began his art education at the Carlos Baca Flor Art School in Arequipa, Peru, in 2003. After moving to the United States in 2006, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Painting and Drawing and MFA in Visual Arts from Boise State University. He has been a resident artist at The CommonWell and MING Studios, and his work has been exhibited in the United States and Peru. Valencia lives and works in Boise, Idaho.

During his residency, Valencia intends to explore themes of gathering, observation, and attention through material processes, drawing inspiration from James Castle’s use of found paper.
